Learning How to Grow Food in Water
This summer, I decided that I wanted to grow more of my own food. My husband and I already grow a lot of herbs and fruit. We haven’t been growing any veggies, though.
I eat salad almost every day. I also knew that I needed to start small, to get the feel of doing this before I jumped in full bore and tried to grow all of my own lettuce.
At first, I thought that a hydroponics system would require a lot of equipment, like a water circulation system.
Then I heard about the Kratky method. Basically, you can grow your herbs and even veggies in mason jars, without circulating water. It’s a passive system: set it up once and forget it.
This seemed like a small enough setup for me, with only a little bit of up-front money. I already had mason jars. I also already had coca noir, one of the inert matters that you use to support the plants. (I live in a tiny house and I have a composting toilet. I use the coca noir in that.) Plus, I already had painter’s tape, which I could use to block out all light. (This is important as if you’ll start growing algae if you allow light to shine on your plant water.)
There were two things that I didn’t have.
