Finishing My 49th Novel

Or maybe it’s the 53rd, but who’s counting?

I recently finished my forty-ninth novel. I posted the accomplishment on Facebook, along with the fact I have two short stories that I need to write, then I will tackle novel number fifty.

Because that is the somewhat unglamorous life of a full-time writer. Despite having finished one thing, I have other things I need to write. Essays and short stories that are due. Plus, more novels.

I’ve been a full-time writer since 2015, though my first novel was published way back in 2003.

During that time, I’ve learned a few things about novel writing. I figured I’d share some of my thoughts.

Every Novel Is Different

You may think that as you get more novels under your belt, that your process is suddenly a clear and shiny path that you merrily skip along.

Hate to burst your bubble, but that isn’t the case. Or at least it hasn’t been for me.

Part of that might be because I write in many different genres and I’m always trying something new. I’m not writing the same romance novel over and over again. The last novel I finished was space opera. The one before that was an epic dark fantasy. The novel I’m writing next is a cozy mystery.
