Tips and Tricks for After Surgery

Injured man on crutches

Almost exactly four weeks ago, I had full knee replacement surgery. I had the surgery immediately following an insanely busy time in my life. I believe I’m doing well in terms of recovery and regaining functionality.

Still, there were things that I wish I’d known before the surgery, so these are the notes that I’d ideally have read, oh, say, five weeks ago.

Brainless

The narcotics are going to make you brainless. I had SO MANY projects planned for once I got out of surgery. I figured maybe it would take a few days, then I’d be stuck sitting on my butt with nothing to do.

Nope. No brain. Not even the brain to listen to all those classes and workshops I had lined up. I was still maintaining my writing streak but it was stressful.

Instead, plan on being brainless, and don’t worry too much about how you’ll occupy your time.

Napping

Admittedly, even if someone had told me that I’d be taking a lot of naps I wouldn’t have necessarily believed them. I’ve never had that great of a relationship with sleep. The idea that I could just lay down, close my eyes, and go to sleep was pretty foreign to me. (Honestly, it still kind of is.) It’s going to be the biggest thing I’m going to miss once I get off…
