My Migraine Journey

How I stopped having migraines

I started having migraines when I was eighteen. I’m currently fifty-eight years old. That’s forty years of migraines.

For most of my life, my migraines weren’t that awful. Or at least, I didn’t consider them that bad. I regularly had two every month. One would occur just before my period, and the second would happen sometime during my period.

Occasionally, I’d have more than my usual two migraines. However, I rarely had more than four migraines in any given month.

My primary trigger for migraines (outside of my period) was stress. Once I figured that out, I tried to avoid being too stressed. Some months I managed, others, I didn’t.

In my forties, I started having headaches and migraines that were triggered by food. Soy was one of the first triggers I figured out. Then I realized that anything super sugary would always trigger a headache, which may or may not then mutate into a migraine.

I discovered paleo when I was forty-eight. It changed my life. I hadn’t realized I was allergic to grain. Once I cut grain, as well as sugar, from my diet, WOW. I’ll write about that journey at some point, but I knew within two weeks that I was never going to eat the Standard American Diet (SAD) again.
